Nowadays there are a few hundred massage styles, including several Thai massage ones. A 100 years back massage wasn’t very widespread and popular at the west. In contrast to now, there have been hardly any massage styles. In the last few decades many varieties of massage, bodywork, physical therapy, energy and yoga healing were all developed. What makes them true?
Let us look at just how such styles develop.
Inch. Some body keeps growing an existing system turns it in to something brand new. For example Swedish massage, deep tissue massage and sports massage are clearly associated with
2. Some one has a good insight and comes up with a truly ราชภัฏ approach. An example would be Trager or even Feldenkrais.
3. Someone studies several systems and unites them into a brand new style. An example would be Thai Massage combined using elements from Shiatsu and Tui Na.
4. Somebody modifies an current system and gives it a fresh name.
Atone point all those brand new systems were not known. They were not viewed as accurate, and were sometimes branded as heresy since they diverged in a recognized style. Over time a growing number of people studied the brand new system, novels were written about it, it became widely known and accepted, and then it became an authentic style. Now it turned into copyrighted, enshrined in stone and fixed with real rules and guides.
At another phase the tables are turned, of course, if some body practices the machine in an alternative way, that is proclaimed unauthentic and contrary to the spirit of this wise creator of the terrific system. If enough individuals see good results in the brand new Testament style, it will with time turned into its own authentic system. This way the cycle continues.
Recently I read an article written by a naturopathic massage therapist who demanded that Thai massage professionals identify if they practice northern or southern or commoner style and they need to demonstrate that they understand a certain prayer which many Thai massage schools at Thailand teach.
Herein Thailand most therapists recite this prayer, and could not do this if asked. And those styles are widely mixed. There are no fixed boundaries. In the northern city of Chiangmai you can find schools that teach the Bangkok personality others teach northern style, and some educators have their very own distinct style.
Is there such a thing to be gained by massage puritanism? Is a massage better because it’s a certain tag? Is there anything wrong with improving or changing a massage style? Within my own mind the reply to all 3 questions is no. Authenticity is actually a practical requirement for precious stones, artwork, or antiques. Healing therapy on the greater level is actually a uniquely human ability which instills efforts to become legislated by labels or definitions.
Some of my most useful Thai massage instructors had their own distinct style, and that is exactly what made them special. From the area of massage and healing therapy, labels, styles and authenticity are all good frameworks for one’s initial education. However, the greater one excels at the healing professions, the less there’s a reason to limit oneself to designations and labels. Curing is just a uniquely personal term that comes not so much from technique than in one’s heart, one’s intention, and something’s fire.
I have to admit that I am biased towards the eastern approach, and my remarks are based on having lived in Asia for many decades, and using practiced and educated Thai massage for at least ten decades ago Asian therapists are much less thinking about categorizing, tagging and authenticating than their western counter parts. I’m not certain what an’accurate’ Thai massage would be, but I’m sure can tell a good one when I receive it.
